Women’s Studies Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala organised 13th International Conference at Senate Hall on the theme ‘Women in Leadership: Emerging Issues and Challenges‘. Dr. Ritu Lehal, Director, Women’s Studies Centre formally welcomed the guests and shared the activities and achievements of the Centre with the audience.
Former CM, Punjab Rajinder Kaur Bhathal was the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, she said that since Independence, role of Women has improved in the decision making process though much more needs to be done to tap their full potential.
Inaugural Address was delivered by Dr.Navtej Purewall, Prof. of Political Sociology and Development Studies at SOAS, University of London. In her address, she focused on bringing about Gender Justice through transformation of the society.
In his address,Prof.Prem Singh Mann, Retd. Professor and Chairperson Dept. of Economics, Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic said that on one hand women has to be motivated to take up the decision making rolesand on the other hand, the society laden with patriarchal attitude & thinking needs to be overhauled to provide women with more opportunities to adorn leadership roles.
Eminent personalities Manpreet Kaur, ACP, Amritsar; Kiranpreet Kaur Dhammi, Member, Women Commission, Punjab; Dr. Sunita Dhir, Retd. Prof. & eminent Theatre and Film Personality;Dr. Sarabjeet kaur Sohal, Principal University College Chunni Kalan; Harjeet kaur, Entrepreneur for promotion of Phulkari and Dr. Gurpreet Kaur Kohli, UK based Entrepreneur and social activist were honoured on the occasion.
Prof. Arvind, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala in his Presidential Address said that feasible measures need to be taken to ensure gender equality in the society right from the grass root level up to the level of highest echelons of decision making.
