GMC faculty holds condolence and protest meeting for Rajasthan Gynaecologist

On a call by Punjab State Medical & Dental Teachers Association (PSMDTA) the faculty of Government Medical College in Patiala held a condolence and protest meeting for Dr. Archana Sharma, a leading gynaecologist and obstetrician of Rajasthan who took the extreme step to end her life for registration of a criminal case of murder and medical negligence against her by police under pressure of the family of a female patient who died during childbirth apparently due to postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) post-delivery.

Unable to face the harassment, the doctor took the extreme step of ending life and in her suicide note she stated post-partem haemorrhage to be a known but rare complication that might occur during childbirth and further pleaded not a harass doctors. After the suicide note went viral on social media, the doctors throughout in the country have come in support of the doctor claiming that no one understands the plights of a doctor.

GMC faculty holds condolence and protest meeting for Rajasthan Gynaecologist. According to Dr. DS Bhullar, state president of PSMDTA, the incidence has drawn a sharp response from the medical fraternity, which is collectively saddened and angry at the turn of events and demands registration of criminal case against the accused police officers and the relatives with immediate arrest.

The medical fraternity is of the opinion that blaming a doctor without any reason and under public pressure is not right and unacceptable and it is a Black day in the history of medical profession in the country and no one is ready to understand the difference between medical negligence and complications. In her death, country has lost one of the brilliant doctor and gold medalist Dr. Archana Sharma who had excellent academic record, said PSMDTA.
