Traditional Recipes from Millets Competition organized at Central University of Punjab

The Department of Applied Agriculture of the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB), under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, organized a ‘Traditional Recipe from Millets Competition – 2022’ on Friday to promote the traditional millet practises of cooking as per instruction of the Ministry of Higher Education. The programme was a part of an activity series to celebrate the International Year of Millets 2023.

During this competition, around 10 teams, comprising around 25 students from various departments of the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB), displayed authentic Indian cuisines prepared from millets. In this competition, the participating teams presented delicious recipes prepared from millets like Barnyard Millet Pulao; Millet Upma; Barnyard Millet Onion Uttapam; Jowar Litti Chokha; Raagi Jaava; and Millet Buckwheat Idli Chaat. The participants also served mouth-watering sweet dishes prepared from millets, viz., Kodo Millet Kheer; Ragi Kheer; Barnyard Millet Halwa; and Ragi Laddoo.

During the inspection of recipes prepared from millets, the jury members of this competition, Prof. Vinod Kuymar Garg (Dean Student Welfare), Dr. Pankaj Bhardwaj and Dr. Puneeta Pandey, tasted and appreciated the delicacies served by the participants.

Dr. Yashi Srivastava and Dr. SS Dhaka, the programme coordinators, stated that millet is a rich source of protein, fibre, mineral, iron and calcium. The objective of this competition is to spread awareness about various different recipes prepared from millets and motivate people to consume millets in their daily diet.

Traditional Recipes from Millets Competition organized at Central University of Punjab. The winners of this competition were the team of Rakesh Raman and Rajiv Ranjan. The second and third positions were bagged by the team of Pavan Srinivas R. and Gopika Dinesh and the team of Sunaina, respectively.
