Dr Gursatinder Singh Professor and Head, department of Ophthalmology in Rajindra Hospital speaking during in the seminar said there are multiple causes of corneal damage leading to blindness but corneal transplantation by eye donation to treat blindness is a very success procedure world over. Presently more than 12 million Indians are suffering from corneal blindness but only 45,000 to 50,000 corneas are available in the country with efforts of nationalized eye banks of both government and non-government sector and to bridge this gap of demand and supply, intensive education and motivation among the general public for eye donation is required.

Programme Officer-cum- Chief coordinator of the event Dr DS Bhullar said, to ensure maximum corneal transplantation for eradication of blindness in the country, eyes should be declared as the national property by law to make it mandatory that every healthy cornea is used to give light of the day to the needy people and at the same people should be educated to shun myths about eye donation like in our neighboring country Sri Lanka which has the world record of maximum eye donation.
