Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University establishes Sri Guru Hari Rai Ji Botanical Garden

The Department of Botany and Environmental Science of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib inaugurated a botanical garden established in 3.5 acres in the University campus on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day-2023. Dedicating this garden to Sri Guru Hari Rai Ji, the University has named it ‘Sri Guru Hari Rai Ji Botanical Garden’.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Prit Pal Singh inaugurated the garden by planting saplings and expressed his desire to see this garden grow further. He said that Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University is constantly striving for environmental protection by taking inspiration from Sri Guru Hari Rai ji’s attachment to the environment and plants. This garden has also been established as an effort for the preservation of local plants and endangered trees found in Punjab. He highly appreciated the efforts of the Department to make this multi-purpose program successful and expressed hope that such initiatives will continue to be undertaken by the Department in the future as well.

On this occasion, Dean Academic Affairs of the University, Prof. S. S. Billing while relating the establishment of Naulakha Bagh by Sri Guru Hari Rai Ji at Kiratpur Sahib congratulated the Department for establishing the garden. He said that this garden established by the University in 3.5 acres is the largest botanical garden in the region in terms of area and that students should take full advantage of this facility.

Dr. Yadwinder Singh, In charge of Botany and Environmental Science Department and the Garden Curator informed the media that this garden has been divided into four main sections, in which besides the plants and trees mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, two hundred different types of plants and trees found in Punjab and nearby areas have already been planted and this process of plantation will continue in the future as well. In addition, a section of the garden has been earmarked for plantation of locally important medicinal plants and other multi-purpose tree species. He appreciated and thanked the local and national level personalities and organizations for their support to develop this garden. He said that Baba Sewa Singh Ji Khadur Sahib Wale and Round Glass Foundation have provided medicinal and various other plants for this garden.

On this occasion Dr. Sikandar Singh, Dean Students’ Welfare, Dr. Sumit Kumar, Head, Department of Economics, Dr. Rupinder Pal Singh, In-charge, Department of Food Processing Technology and Faculty Member of Department of Botany and Environmental Science Dr. Navdeep Kaur, Dr. Hina Khan, Dr. Shweta and all the researchers and students of the department were present.
