In a bizarre incident, an IPS officer of Punjab Police, Harjeet Singh, posted as senior superintendent of police at Faridkot has ordered an inquiry against 10 of his non-gazetted officials (NGOs) subordinates for disobeying his orders, to book a person, per month under NDPS act in their respective police stations.
The inquiry against inspectors Prem Nath and Jagseer Singh, and sub-inspectors Jasveer Singh, Jaswant Singh, Baljeet Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Joginder Kaur, Vikil Singh, Pal Singh and Gurmeet Ram was ordered late on Monday by Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harjit Singh for failing to meet target of booking drug offenders, of registering at least one case in their jurisdiction under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in a month.
These officials are posted at police stations- City Faridkot, Kotakpura, Sadar Faridkot and Kotakpura. Faridkot district has seven police stations. It seems the officials posted at police stations Bajakhana, Jaitu and Sadiq has already met their targets of booking persons under NDPS Act.
Faridkot SSP Harjit Singh has directed a DSP-rank officer to conduct a departmental inquiry against three inspectors, seven sub-inspectors and one ASI-rank police official for failing to meet the monthly target of booking persons under NDPS act.
“Book a person per month under NDPS Act or face the music”, seems Punjab police new mantra; some NGO’s met their target. It comes a month after the Faridkot police issued orders on September 8 instructing one officer in each police station in its jurisdiction to register at least one narcotics case every month and after one month on October 7,2023 the inquiry orders were issued.
Later clarifying on this, Faridkot SSP Harjit Singh had told the media that, ““There was a clerical mistake in drafting the letter. Other than registering the NDPS Act cases, these police officials had been issued directions to provide assistance in investigating the drug cases under the police stations of their jurisdiction which they failed to do,” I know it is a harsh step but it is just like guidance for them. My purpose is to make these police officers focus on the real job of investigation and catching criminals instead of remaining more involved in clerical work.”
