With No Demand,6 power units shut down in Punjab

After the scorching month of June, the month of July has brought relief for Punjab state power corporation limited. The power demands dipped following widespread rain in the state.
Keeping the low demand in mind, the powercom has shut down its four thermal units and two hydro units. As per available information, two units of both GGSSTP Ropar and GHTP Lehra Mohabbat and two units of Ranjit Sagar’s have been shut down.
The same is confirmed by the chief engineers of both Ropar and Lehra Mohabbat Thermal plants. The officers said “due to no demand, the units have been shut downed.”
Few days ago, in the month of June, the scorching heatwave and the beginning of paddy transplantation had pushed the state’s peak power demand beyond its maximum supply capacity of 16,000 MW and it had touched the highest-ever figure of 16,089 MW.
But, today being a holiday, the maximum power demand has touched 12790 MW . Recently, the power demand had dipped below 10,500 MW following widespread rains in the state.
With No Demand,6 power units shut down in Punjab. Today, only two of the four units of the Ropar, one out of three units of Lehra Mohabbat and two units of Ranjit Sagar hydropower project are running.
A PSPCL official said, “Whenever the demand will go up, we will start our thermal units. It all depends on the rain spell.
Power demand in Punjab rose around 5 per cent in June 2024 as compared to June last year. The maximum power demand touched 16089 MW on June 29 in Punjab.
Due to intense heat waves and practically no rain in June ,the average daily supply by PSPCL has also increased by around 24 percent to 2918 LU per day against last year’s supply of 2352 lakh units per day. The maximum daily power supply made by PSPCL is 3572 LU on June 26 this year while the daily power supply done by PSPCL last June was 3425 LU on May 23.
