SGPC President Election: SAD’s Bhundar clears litmus test; Shiromani Sudhar Lehar gets major setback as it stands nowhere

In a high-voltage presidential election of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) held today, Harjinder Singh Dhami, the incumbent president of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhndak Committee has once again wins the election for the above said post.

Of the 148 members, 142 turned up to participate in the election process for the top post of the apex gurdwara body at the Teja Singh Samundri Hall in Golden Temple complex, Amritsar.  A total of 142 votes were polled. Sudhar Lehar candidate Jagir Kaur gets only 33 votes where as Harjinder singh Dhami polled 107 votes. Two votes were cancelled.

Dhami has been a member of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee for Sham Churasi in Hoshiarpur since 1996. This is Dhami’s fourth term as SGPC president. He was first elected as SGPC president on November 29,2021.

Raghujit singh Virk is the new senior vice president , Mohinder Singh Kalyan as the Junior vice president and Sher Singh Mand has been nominated as the general secretary.

In 2021, when Jagir Kaur had alleged support of BJP, polled 42 votes and Dhami 104 votes.

In 2023 again Dhami won the election and his opponent Ghunas gets 17 votes only.

While the SAD has fielded sitting president of the SGPC Harjinder Singh Dhami, the opposition group under the banner of SAD Sudhar Lehar has once again put its bet on the first ever women president of the Sikh body, Bibi Jagir Kaur, who has also served in the Badal govt cabinet in the past.

Dhami was contesting the elections for the fourth time in a row. Whereas  Jagir Kaur remained the president of the SGPC from March 16, 1999, to Nov 11, 2000, from Sept 23, 2004, to Nov 23, 2005, and then from Nov 27, 2020, to Nov 29, 2021. On the other hand, Dhami was first elected as the SGPC president on Nov 29, 2021, and held the post for three consecutive years. Dhami is contesting the elections for the fourth time in a row.
