The untimely passing of Professor Amardeep Singh, an esteemed academic and Director of Constituent Colleges at Punjabi University, has left the faculty, staff, and students in profound shock and sorrow. Professor Singh suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on October 31, 2024. A revered scholar and respected administrator, he was widely acknowledged for his dedication and contributions to advancing computer science education in the region and across India. He leaves behind a legacy defined by his academic excellence, research, and invaluable service to Punjabi University.

Professor Amardeep Singh, born on March 18, 1974, earned his Ph.D. from Thapar University with a focus on DNA and Quantum Computing applications for VLSI circuits. Throughout his 24-year career, Professor Singh contributed immensely to various research domains, including Network Security, Cloud Technology, Smart Agriculture, and Digital Forensics. A prolific researcher, he authored over 80 international publications, guiding numerous masters and doctoral students.

Professor Amardeep held numerous administrative roles at Punjabi University, including as Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, Coordinator for the Centre of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and presently he was Director, Constituent Colleges Punjabi University Patiala. His work on government-funded projects, such as the Ministry of Information Technology’s VLSI Design and Software Development initiative, exemplified his commitment to enhancing research capabilities.

Professor B.S. Ghuman, former Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University, shared heartfelt condolences with Amardeep Singh and the family, recalling him as “a scholar par excellence” and “a thorough gentleman” who made remarkable contributions during his tenure as Head of the Department. Professor Arvind, also a former Vice Chancellor, expressed deep shock and sorrow, recognizing Professor Singh’s impact on the university community.

The university’s Vice Chancellor KK Yadav,  Dean of Academic Affairs, Professor Navleen Multani, Registrar Professor Sanjeev Puri, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor Gurmeet Kaur, and Head of the Computer Engineering Department Professor Himanshu Aggarwal, echoed these sentiments. They noted the profound loss for both the institution and the field of Computer Science, acknowledging Professor Singh’s exceptional dedication and passion for teaching and research. PUTA President Professor Bhupinder Virk and Secretary Dr. Maninder Singh also extended their deepest condolences, recalling him as a committed educator, compassionate leader, and remarkable researcher.

Dr. Amardeep Singh is survived by his mother, wife, daughter, who is a pursuing medical study in the USA, and son, currently studying Computer Engineering in Canada. The Bhog and Antim Ardas will take place at Gurudwara Singh Sabha, SST Nagar, Patiala, on November 6, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
