AAP supremo gets relief from apex court

In a major relief to aam admi party cadre, the Supreme Court today granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the case registered by under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) over the liquor policy case, while referring his petition challenging the arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to a larger bench.

While delivering the judgment, the top court noted that the parameters of Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act were examined by the bench.

“We have not examined the question of bail but we have examined parameters of Section 19 PMLA. We have explained the difference between Section 19 and Section 45. Section 19 is the subjective opinion of officers and is subject to judicial review, Section 45 is exercised by the court itself,” Justice Sanjiv Khanna stated in court.

AAP supremo gets relief from apex court. It added that courts cannot direct Kejriwal to step down as the chief minister because of his implication in the present case and that it is for him to take a call.

Kejriwal will however remain in custody since he was arrested by the CBI under the Prevention of Corruption Act in relation to the same liquor policy case on June 25.

While the challenge to his ED arrest remained pending before the Supreme Court, the AAP chief was arrested by CBI on June 26 on charges of corruption and criminal conspiracy in the excise policy case. He has been in judicial custody in both ED and CBI cases.

The AAP on the Supreme Court ruling said “satyamev jayate” (Truth alone triumphs). “Satyamev Jayate (truth alone triumphs)”, the party posted on X (formerly Twitter9 in Hindi along with a picture of Arvind Kejriwal holding the national flag.
