A new-born baby diagnosed with a rare sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) successfully underwent surgical excision at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda.

The baby was delivered at AIIMS Bathinda, where the prenatal diagnosis had already set the stage for immediate postnatal care and intervention.

Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a rare congenital tumor that occurs at the base of the spine, affecting approximately 1 in 35,000 live births. In this case, a multidisciplinary team at AIIMS, Bathinda, worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of both the baby and the mother.

The delivery, conducted under expert supervision of Dr Lajja and team, went smoothly. Post- delivery, the baby was managed in (neonatal intensive care unit) NICU under the care of Dr Manish Swami and was found to have a large sacrococcygeal tumor, measuring approximately 20x18x16 cm, weighing about 670 grams. A prompt decision was made to perform surgical excision to prevent complications such as infection, rupture, or potential malignancy.

The mother of the baby, expressed her gratitude to the medical team, saying, “I am overwhelmed by the care and dedication shown by the doctors and staff at AIIMS Bathinda. They gave my baby a new lease on life.”

This successful case highlights the growing medical capabilities of AIIMS Bathinda, which continues to establish itself as a center of excellence in advanced healthcare. The newborn is expected to make a full recovery, and regular follow-ups will ensure his long-term health and development.

This achievement underscores the importance of early prenatal screening and access to specialized care for complex congenital conditions.
