Alert sounded by DC in Pathankot ; issues order

Deputy Commissioner Pathankot has sounded an alert in the district after the water level in the Ranjit Sagar Dam reservoir level (RL) touches 522 m. The maximum level is 527.91 m
Due to the increase in water level, the executive engineer , project and RM division , Ranjit Sagar Dam, Shahpur Kandi has informed the district administration about the current situation. Keeping in mind the safety of the dam, the authorities may to discharge more water from the dam. The deputy commissioner has deputed the officers to handle the emergency situation.
The Deputy Commissioner, Muhammad Ishfaq said ” the officials of Ranjit Sagar Dam have informed that tomorrow, August 17, water will be released from the dam at around 8 am, which will reach the Ravi river adjacent to Gurdaspur district after about 3 or 4 hours. He further appealed to the people of the villages near the Ravi River to avoid going to the low-lying fields/areas near the river.”
The Ranjit Sagar Dam, also known as the Thein Dam, is part of a hydroelectric project constructed by the Punjab Irrigation Department on the Ravi River. The project is used for both irrigation and power generation. The project is the largest hydroelectric dam in Punjab with a capacity of 600 megawatts. Also, the dam is amongst the highest earth-fill dams in India and has the largest diameter penstock pipes in the country.
