Bhakra dam is releasing around 7000 cusecs daily since August 19 through spillways along with the regular water discharge from turbines and maintaining the water level at 1666 feet while the normal storage capacity of the dam is 1680.82 feet.
Confirming the same, a senior functionary of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), on the condition of anonymity said “ The dam gates have remain open at 2 feet level, discharging around 7000 cusecs of water daily for the last four days. Along with this around 36,000 cusecs are released through turbines taking it to 43,000 cusesc daily. As a precautionary measure, the management has decided to release the water in phased manner and maintain the water level at a certain point. Moreover, if the inflow of water in increases after the predicted heavy rainfall in the region, including Himachal Pradesh and dam’s catchment areas, the reservoir has the capacity to absorb the inflow water to some extent instead of releasing it all at once. The Board authorities are keeps an eagle’s eye on the situation”

On August 19,2025, the water level of Bhakra Dam had reached 1665. 37 feet, when the authorities decided to release water in a controlled manner from the Bhakra Dam of the Bhakra Nangal Power Project. As per the plan, the authorities had decided to release 45000 cusecs of water- 38000 cusecs through turbine and 7000 cusecs through spillway (gates).
Before this, it was on August 13,2023 when the flood gates of Bhakra Dam was opened to release water when the water level at Bhakra dam touched 1672 against the capacity of 1680.82. BBMB has avoided filling the dam up to its maximum limit and instead adheres to stricter water level targets. The current release is part of BBMB’s policy to ensure that dam operations remain safe and responsive to climatic conditions.
