The appointment committee of cabinet on Sunday has approved the appointment of Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood as the new chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a two-year term; he will take charge after Subodh Kumar Jaiswal (IPS of Maharashtra 1985 batch) completes his tenure on May 25.
As per available information, on Saturday evening a high-level committee consisting of prime minister Narendra Modi, chief justice of India DY Chandrachud and the Leader of the Opposition, the Congress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, met at the former’s residence in Delhi to settle on a candidate.
As per information, the others on the shortlist were Madhya Pradesh Police DGP SK Saxena and Taj Hassan, the Director General of Fire Service, Civil Defence, and Home Guards.
As per available information, Parveen Sood,a 1986-batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre was appointed as the State DGP three years ago. Parveen Sood has neither served in the CBI nor with the Union government ever in his career, was not empanelled as DGP at the Centre. His name was not among the original panel of officers short listed for the job. As the empanelment at Centre will not apply in the case of Director, CBI as in the case of other Central government appointments, as he or she derives the powers under the Delhi Police Special Establishment Act, 1946.
