Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) District Congress President Ajay Mangupur demanded that the Central government provide immediate and adequate compensation for the huge losses caused by the recent floods. Terming the Prime Minister’s visit to Punjab as a sign of concern for the Punjabi people, Ajay Mangupur said that more than 4.5 lakh acres of agricultural land have been badly affected by the floods, where kharif crops, especially paddy and sugarcane, have been completely destroyed. He has demanded compensation of at least Rs 80,000 per acre to enable farmers to continue farming after the damage.
Ajay Mangupur also mentioned the damage to houses, dairy animals, basic amenities like flour mills, link roads, dharamshalas and dispensaries in villages, stressing that the compensation package should not be limited to crops alone but should cover every aspect of rural life affected by the floods.
Ajay Mangupur criticised the Bhakra Beas Management Board, saying that the flood situation worsened due to lack of coordination in releasing water from dams. He suggested that though the BBMB remains under the Centre, its executive control and management should be handed over to Punjab and engineers should be appointed in the Punjab Irrigation Department as they understand the geographical conditions of the region and the needs of farmers better.
He said that not only farmers but also farm labourers have been badly affected and they should also be given adequate compensation.
