“Central Status to Panjab University, Chandigarh”; Central Govt clear the air in parliament

The untiring campaign of the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led State Government against the attempts at centralization of the Panjab University Chandigarh met with success when the Union Minister replied in the Rajya Sabha that the Union Government is not going in for the centralization of the Panjab University Chandigarh.

Reiterating the commitment of the State Government on the issue of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat, the Higher Education and Languages Minister Punjab Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said, “Panjab University is our heritage and we have right over it. The centralization of the Panjab University would not be tolerated at any cost.”

The Minister further said that the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led Punjab Government had passed the resolution in the Vidhan Sabha against the centralization of the Panjab University. Carrying forward the campaign, the Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab Vikramjit Singh Sawhney raised the issue in the upper house of the parliament to which the Union Minister replied that the Panjab University Chandigarh is not being centralized. Hence, it is a big win for the State Government.

Newly elected Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Punjab, Vikramjit Singh Sahney has raised a question in the ongoing monsoon session, about the Central govt plan to give central status to Panjab University, Chandigarh or not.

To his question raised in the parliament, Dr Subash Sarkar, minister of state in ministry of education has cleared the air and confirmed that “ his ministry has taken a policy decision to not to convert such universities into Central Universities, which have a legacy issue.”

Punjab government is already opposing the Union government move to convert the status of Panjab University to Central University. The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on June 30,2022 had passed a resolution against the attempt to alter the status of Panjab University (PU) into a Central University, while strongly urging the Centre not to consider any change in the nature and character of the institution.The resolution said any decision to change PU’s character would not be acceptable to the people of Punjab and, therefore, any proposal in this regard should be dropped with immediate effect.
