After the hue and cry raised by several political parties in Punjab over the proposed bill to place Chandigarh under the same administrative category as other Union Territories in the upcoming Winter Session, the Central Government issued a clarification stating that the bill will not be introduced in the current session

In an official post shared by PIB–Home Ministry on X, the government said that the proposal to simplify the process for central legislation for Chandigarh is merely “under consideration” and that no final decision has been taken.

The Ministry emphasised that the proposal does not seek to change Chandigarh’s existing governance system or alter its “traditional relationship” with Punjab or Haryana. “This proposal is only about simplifying the process of law-making for the Union Territory by the Central Government and is still under consideration at the Central Government level,” the statement read.

Earlier Central govt seeks to bring Union Territory of Chandigarh under Article 240 of Constitution by tabling the 131st Amendment Bill in winter session of Parliament, similar to other UTs like Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu-that would bring Chandigarh under the same administrative category as other Union Territories in the upcoming winter session

Today, the Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that the bill will not be brought in the current session and that no final decision has been taken on the proposal.

According to Daljit Singh Cheema of the SAD, “Political opposition and resentment among residents forced the government to withdraw the proposal”
