Chandigarh Sukhna flood gates opened after 12 years

Due to incessant rain from the last three days, the water level reaches 1163 feet, which is a danger level. The Chandigarh administration taking immediate measure, today opened the flood gates of Sukhna in the afternoon and the excess water is released.
The flood gates of Sukhna opened after 12 years. It was in 2006 when due to regular rain the water accumulated in Sukhna and to tackle the situation the flood gates were opened. At that time water entered Bapu Dham colony, sector 26.
Taking a precautionary measure, the residents of Bapu Dham Colony were altered in advance. From Bapu Dham colony the water will reach sector 47 and enter Mohali. Mohali residents were also alerted.
Earlier Inderjit Gulati, Executive Engineer, CP Division No2 (Roads), UT, Chandigarh sent an urgent mail to DC Chandigarh, DC Mohali, DC Patiala along with others at 1:15 PM on Sunday, intimating the Sukhna water level. At 1:00 PM on Sept 23, the water level reaches 1162 feet, which is just a one feet less than the permissible level. Gulati further wrote that whenever the water level reach 1163, the flood gates of Sukhna will be opened.
