Checkmate and Champions: Modern School hosts city’s premier chess tournament; top schools compete in chess championship

Modern Senior Secondary School, Patiala, hosted a grand Inter-school Chess Tournament on 30 July 2025, attracting participation of 200 students from 18 of Patiala’s top schools. The tournament featured intense competition across three categories: Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19.

The chief guest of this event was Aadya Gupta, an international chess player and Women FIDE Master, who also conducted an ‘Exclusive Workshop’ with Modern School’s budding chess players a day prior to the tournament. She later felicitated the winners of the tournament, awarding them their trophies and certificates, and shared a few words of encouragement with all participants.

In the Under-19 category, Nidhi of Government Multipurpose School, Patiala emerged victorious, securing the first position. The second and third places were claimed by Radhesh and Bhavraj Singh from Sri Aurobindo International School, Patiala and Our Lady of Fatima Convent Senior Secondary School, Patiala respectively.

The Under-17 category saw fierce competition as well, with Army Public School, Patiala’s Gurshabad School claiming the top spot. The second and third positions were closely contested, with Akshaj Singla and Sarthak Singhal from Our Lady of Fatima Convent Senior Secondary School and Career Academy, Patiala securing respective positions.

In the Under-14 category, a standout performance by Rudra Pratap Singhal from Career Academy, Patiala led to a well-deserved first place. Dilmeet Kaur and Vainika from The Millennium School, Patiala and Our Lady of Fatima Convent Senior Secondary School, Patiala secured the second and third positions, showcasing the high level of talent in this age group.
