DC Patiala issues instructions to officials to complete the Vaddi and Chotti Nadi pending project in stipulated time

Patiala Deputy Commissioner Dr. Preeti Yadav conducted a site review of the rejuvenation and beautification project of Vaddi Nadi and Chotti Nadi. During the visit, she directed officials of the Drainage Department and Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board to expedite the work as per the instructions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, ensuring mutual coordination to complete the project within the stipulated timelines.
Dr. Yadav emphasized that the rejuvenation of Vaddi Nadi and Chotti Nadi is a key project of the Punjab Government aimed at transforming the water bodies into tourist destinations through extensive beautification efforts. She reiterated that no laxity would be tolerated in the implementation of this significant initiative.
Providing an update on the project’s progress, Dr. Preeti Yadav shared that, according to officials of the Water Supply and Sewerage Board, a 15 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant near Daulatpur is 80 percent complete, while a 2.5 MLD Effluent Treatment Plant , designed to treat industrial waste from the Focal Point, is 35 percent complete. Additionally, a 26 MLD STP behind Sunny Enclave has also reached 80 percent completion. All these facilities are expected to be operational by September 30, 2025.
Dr. Preeti Yadav also noted that officials from the Drainage Department highlighted damage caused by floods, which severely impacted the check dams of Vaddi Nadi and the STP, resulting in delays. However, she confirmed that work has resumed at an accelerated pace and is now scheduled for completion by October 31, 2025. She directed the officials to assure that no untreated sewage water will be discharged into the nadis, and only treated water will flow into them after the project’s completion.

The Deputy Commissioner directed the officials to submit regular progress reports and highlighted the importance of this project in addressing the city’s drainage issues. She stated that Vaddi Nadi and Chotti Nadi are the main drainage channels of Patiala, but blockages during the monsoon season lead to flooding. The ₹164 crore rejuvenation project includes the channelization of Chotti Nadi, construction of walking and cycling tracks, fencing, check dams, bridges, and inlets, along with the beautification and restoration of both nadis.
Dr. Preeti Yadav expressed confidence that these efforts will not only enhance the city’s drainage system but also provide a significant boost to its aesthetic and environmental appeal. SDO Rakwinder Singh from the Drainage Department, SDO Sanjay Jindal from the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and other officials were present during the site visit.
