Today, a meeting of the Democratic Teachers’ Council (D.T.C.) group was held at Punjabi University, Patiala, to discuss the issues being faced by the teaching faculty.

The meeting was presided over by Dr. Nishan Singh Deol, who led a detailed discussion on the various challenges confronting the teachers of Punjabi University Patiala. The group unanimously resolved that the long-pending promotions of teachers should be prioritized by the Vice-Chancellor and must be addressed on the basis of time of promotion without any bias or “pick and choose” approach.

The oldest pending files must be dealt with first to ensure fair treatment. The meeting also strongly condemned the absence of the Vice-Chancellor during the University Foundation Day function held on April 30 at Punjabi University.

In the meeting, D.T.C. Co-Convener Dr. Nirmal Singh sharply criticized the Punjab Government and demanded the immediate appointment of a permanent Vice-Chancellor, as the university has been functioning without one for over a year. He stated that the lack of a regular Vice-Chancellor has led to stagnation in faculty promotions and academic decisions, and the overall administrative environment has deteriorated.

He further pointed out that, for the first time in the history of Punjabi University, due to a lack of proper decision-making, the  Court had to attach the salary of the Registrar in an ongoing legal case.

During the discussion, faculty members remarked that while the government continues to loudly promote ideas of an “education revolution,” it is trying to run Punjabi University without a permanent Vice-Chancellor — which is nothing short of a cruel joke.

In conclusion, Dr. Sukhjinder Butter thanked all the teachers for attending and warned that if a regular Vice-Chancellor is not appointed soon, the Democratic Teachers’ Council will launch a strong agitation.
