The Department of Posts has provided concessional rates for transporting educational materials like textbooks through a service called “Gyan Post”, modelled on the book post system.
The service will have prices ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 100, for packages ranging from up to 300 grams to 5kg respectively.
Satyam Tiwari, Senior Superintendent Post Offices , Patiala Division , Patiala intimated that under Gyan Post, printed materials that are “prescribed in syllabus for correspondence and regular courses for students” by State and Union government education boards or universities will be permitted to be carried through GyanPost; periodicals like magazines will not be covered under the scheme.
Unlike book post, this product will be eligible for real-time tracking. Educational articles can be sent through this scheme which is started on May 1.
Book post costs Rs 4 for an article that is below 50 grams, and ₹3 extra for every 50 grams above that. As such, individual lightweight textbooks would cost marginally more than book post, but 5kg parcels would be a third of the price. Rates of Postage are as under :
Weight Upto 300 grams Proposed Rate of Postage 20, similarity Between 301 to 500 gms 25, Between 501 to 1000gms 35, Between 1001to 2000 gms 50, Between 2001 to 3000 gms 65, Between 3001 to 4000 gms 80, and Between 4001 to 5000 gms 100.
Any works that are “related with social, cultural and religious nature issued or published in accordance with relevant law of the land” would be eligible for the scheme, the postal department specified in an official notification for Gyan Post.
