Today, despite a power demand touches 16,331 MW and closure of one unit of GGSSTP, Ropar thermal plant, Punjab state power corporation still manages the situation without any announced power cut.
Today, one unit of 210 MW of PSPCL owned GGSSTP, Ropar shuts down due to some technical glitch. Despite the power generation shortage, PSPCL still manages the high power demand of 16,331 recorded at 12:00 noon without imposing any power cut.
Despite closure of one unit, PSPCL again manages 16K plus demand for third consecutive day. Yesterday on June 11,2025 the power demand had crossed all the previous records, reached an unprecedented 16,836 MegaWatt (MW). On June 10, powercom recorded 16,249 MW. The previous year’s peak of 16089 MW recorded on June 29, 2024.
Powecom senior official on the condition of anonymity said “we can easily manage power demand upto 17000 MW. We have already made arrangements. We are giving regular supply to our agriculture feeder for paddy transplant and to our residential consumers without any power cut.”
A senior functionary of the powercom on the condition of anonymity said, “we are working 24X7 and assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure smooth power availability , distribution during the ongoing high-demand period.”

This spike, driven by relentless heat and the paddy sowing season, has put immense pressure on the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).
The drawing limit from the northern grid is 10400 MW and its own maximum power availability may be around 6500 MW under ideal conditions.
But, the Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO had already announced that Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has set an ambitious target of achieving zero power outages by March 2026. This decision was taken during the high-level meeting held in Chandigarh to review the preparedness of the power sector before the onset of summer and paddy seasons.
