The Patiala district administration has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India to address the issue of stubble burning and manage crop residues effectively.

The MOU was signed in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmad Parray, Executive Director of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Vivek Mittal, and Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Jaswinder Singh, representing the facilitating agency of the district administration.

Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmad Parray highlighted the district administration’s commitment to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s directives to curtail stubble burning in Patiala district. Emphasizing this agreement as a pilot project for the district, Parray expressed optimism that its success would pave the way for implementation in other districts as well. Deloitte India will play a pivotal role in procuring straw from farmers and facilitating its utilization in various industries, thereby promoting ex-situ management practices without resorting to burning.

Showkat Ahmad Parray underscored Deloitte’s pro bono support in addressing the stubble burning issue in Patiala, detailing a comprehensive 12-14-week study to devise an effective crop residue management strategy in consultation with all stakeholders. Vivek Mittal, Executive Director of Deloitte, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to social impact, citing a successful track record in Haryana where similar measures led to a significant reduction in stubble burning incidents.
