Mata Ganga Khalsa College for Girls, Kottan , Ludhiana organised a seminar on Gender Equity to sensitise the students about gender issues and the challenges faced by woman. The event was organised by the Department of history under the supervision of the Department head Agamjyot Kaur Tiwana.
The resource person of the seminar was the president of the Alumni Association of the college Dr. Ankdeep Kaur Attwal. She is currently Head of the Department of English at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib and the public relations officer.
Dr. Attwal deliberated on the concept of Gender Equity and asked the audience to introspect if we are moving towards empowerment or another form of dominance. She built her argument by delving deep into the historical background of the celebration of women’s day and the journey of feminist theory from feminism to post feminism and later to womanism.
She emphasised that gender equity does not mean to provide equal resources, rather it is providing resources as per the need of a particular gender; whether it is man, woman or LGTBTQ.
Dr. Attwal elaborated on the different spheres of one’s life where one faces discrimination based on gender differences. She also highlighted the gender constructions by society which not only limits the freedom for women, but also the limitations laid on men by the society.
She elaboratively discussed the issues of male silence and its resultant violent behaviour. At the end, she motivated the audience to be the harbingers of change by adopting a supportive attitude towards other women and by making their male counterparts realise the importance of respect for the other gender. She concluded her talk on the thought that the empowered woman empowers women.
Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Principal of the College welcomed and thanked Dr. Attwal for sharing her views on gender issues. He endorsed the views of Dr. Attwal that to empower women and to bring gender equality, we need to adopt a you-centric approach instead of I-centric. He motivated the staff and students to break the stereotypes and to understand the humanistic concerns.
