In a surprise move, the Election Commission of India has ordered the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to modify the content of its Lok Sabha elections’ campaign song.

On Thursday, April 25,2024 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had released its election campaign theme song, “Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se”, written and sung by AAP Timarpur MLA Dilip Pandey, to further intensify its election campaign.

The song, which revolves around the arrest of AAP national convenor and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, was released by party leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, party’s Delhi unit convener Gopal Rai and national secretary Pankaj Gupta, at a function held at the party headquarters. The song raises allegations of dictatorial governance, unemployment, inflation, and conspiracy targeting opposition leaders, including Kejriwal.

Now, the Election Commission has asked Delhi’s ruling party to resubmit the poll song for certification after making the required changes.

The ECI has specifically objected to the phrase “jail ke jawaab me hum vote denge” and the visual of a mob holding a photo of Arvind Kejriwal behind bars, stating that it casts aspersions on the Judiciary and contravenes the provisions of ECI Guidelines and Rule 6(1) (g) of Programme and Advertising Codes.

This would be the first time that the poll body has banned the election songs of any party-AAP leader Atishi claimed.

Atishi claimed that the Election Commission has banned AAP’s campaign song and this Election Commission’s action is a political weapon hurled by the BJP.

Election song controversy: this would be the first time that the poll body has banned the election songs of any party-AAP. In March, Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. AAP claims that he was jailed because the BJP didn’t want him to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
