Punjab governor Banwari Lal Purohit has given his ascent for the appointment of IPS of 1997 batch Punjab Police’s former state intelligence chief and President’s police medal for distinguished service award winner Jatinder Singh Aulakh as chairman Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the state Cabinet had given a go ahead to forward the recommendation to Governor, Punjab regarding the appointment of Jatinder Singh Aulakh as the Chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission.

The commission has been without a regular chairman since March last year after the retirement of Jagbans Singh Powar. After his retirement, the additional charge of the chairman was given to a women member Jamit Kaur Jeji. After her tenure expired on September 29,2023, the post again falls vacant.

The PPSC recruits class I,II officers for various departments in the state.

Jatinder Singh Aulakh is the first IPS officer who got the privilege to head the institution. Till date retired army officers IAS, journalist amongst were appointed as chairman of Punjab Public Service Commission.

The previous state governments had appointed police officers as member of Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) but no chairman from police background was appointed as its chairman.

Earlier, Punjab Police officers Bakshi Ram, Lok Nath Angra, GS Bhullar, Hardayal Singh Mann were appointed members of PPSC.

First IPS appointed as chairman PPSC . As per available information, Bakshi Ram was given the additional charge of chairman for short duration.

Jatinder Singh Aulakh a Punjab Public School (PPS), Nabha pass-out belongs to Bargari village of Faridkot district where his father, a farmer, remained sarpanch of the village for continuous 35 years. He started his career as DSP in 1990. He has served in various important positions in Punjab Police and after the Bhagwant Mann government took charge in March 2022, as inspector general, he also served as intelligence chief.

Aulakh was among the favorites of all ruling parties, including the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal-led governments and remained always on key posts in the field like SSP, commissioner of police, inspector general.

He was awarded President Police Medal for Distinguished Services on August 15,2022
