First time in the history a former Governor committed suicide

A Governor is a constitutional post in India, The primary function of the governor is to preserve, protect and defend the constitution and the law as incorporated in his/her oath of office under Article 159 of the Indian constitution in the administration of the State affairs.

69 years old Ashwani Kumar, who remained posted on such a high post, yesterday committed suicide, in his home, at Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. In a suicide note he wrote that he is ending his life due to disease and disability, of his own free will. He said his soul is embarking on a new journey and everyone needed to be happy, and that there should be no rituals or ceremonies,”

In 2013, the Dr Manmohan Singh led UPA government appointed him as the governor of Nagaland and Manipur governor. But Ashwani Kumar stepped down from the post after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power after the 2014 general elections.

Kumar, the 1973-batch Indian Police Service officer, headed Himachal Pradesh police as its  director general of police (DGP) between 2006 and 2008, as CBI director between 2008 and 2010, leading investigations into cases like the the Aarushi Talwar murder case, initiated a probe into the alleged Commonwealth Games scam, and it was under his tenure that a charge sheet in the alleged Sohrabuddin fake encounter case was filed against now Home Minister Amit Shah.During a stint with the Special Protection Group, Kumar had been in charge of the security of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

As per police sources “his family members were present when he went inside the room, locked it and committed suicide by hanging himself with a nylon rope. The family does not suspect any foul play.”

First time in the history a former Governor committed suicide. Kumar is survived by his wife Chanda, son and daughter-in-law.
