Harjot Singh Bains, Cabinet Minister for Education and Information & Public Relations, Punjab, stated that during the monsoon season, Punjab suffers heavy losses due to floods in areas bordering Himachal Pradesh. The permanent solution to this problem lies in channelizing the rivers. For this, the Central Government should initiate the process of channelization.
This morning, after heavy rainfall in the foothill regions adjoining Himachal Pradesh, excess water entered the Sirsa river and seasonal streams (khads), damaging fields of farmers in Aaspur, Awankot, Ranjitpura, Aalowal, and Kharota villages. Reviewing the situation, Harjot Bains said, “Over the past several weeks, we have visited dozens of villages in the Nangal/Anandpur Sahib sub-division. More than 100 villages have suffered damage. People’s houses, businesses, livestock, and furniture were destroyed. Life is slowly returning to normal, but nature is still testing us. Today’s early morning rainfall has caused fresh damage to crops and farmland. Our Chief Minister, Bhagwant Singh Mann, has already announced compensation of ₹20,000 per acre. Special Girdawari has been ordered for these villages as well, which will soon be completed. We are committed to providing relief to every affected family. The Punjab Government stood with its people during the floods.”
The Cabinet Minister further stated that due to today’s rainfall, standing crops in the villages have been destroyed, and many homes were flooded, causing hardships for residents. Bains personally visited Aaspur village, met the residents, and reviewed the situation. He issued immediate directions to the administration to begin relief operations. He said that relief teams are being dispatched to the affected areas to ensure people’s safety and provide necessary facilities. The administration has also appealed to people not to go near rivers and seasonal streams and to remain alert. He added that teams of volunteers, panches, sarpanches, and youth are constantly engaged in helping affected people. The administration is working tirelessly to restore essential services. He reassured the people that the government stands with them and relief will reach them soon.
On this occasion, Jujhar Singh Multani, Member of Saini Welfare Board Punjab, along with Satnam Singh Aaspur, Nirmal Singh, Gurbakhsh Singh, Dayal Singh, Hari Singh, Harjinder Singh Nambardar, Gurmeet Singh, Pawan Kumar, Harvinder Singh, and others were present.
