Former Punjab Governor, Chandigarh Administrator passes away

Former Governor of Punjab and Chandigarh’s administrator Shivraj Patil passed away on Friday in his hometown, Latur, Maharashtra, at the age of 90. He remained on the post from January 22,2010 to January 22, 2015
The veteran Congressman who remained Speaker of the 10th Lak Sabha , Union Home Minister was suffering from a brief period of illness, and breathed his last in his residence, Devghar, as reported by the news agency PTI. He is survived by son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, and two granddaughters.
Born on October 12, 1935, Patil studied at Osmania University and was trained as a lawyer before entering public life. Patil began his political journey as municipal council chief of Latur and was elected as an MLA in the early 70s. Later, he went on to win the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times. He lost to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Rupatai Patil Nilangekar in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

A seven-time member of parliament (MP) from Latur in Maharashtra, hold key portfolios in the Union Cabinet during the UPA government. Shivraj Patil has served as Minister of State (Defence) in the 1980s, as well as Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the Lok Sabha in the 1990s. He also served as the Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008.
Patil resigned from the post of Home Minister on 30 November 2008, following widespread criticism raised after 2008 Mumbai attacks, and took moral responsibility for the security lapse that led to the attacks.
Known for his dignified conduct, Patil never indulged in personal attacks, neither in public speeches nor in private conversations.
Following his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences. Through a post on X, the PM said that he is saddened by the demise of the veteran politician.
