Glacier breaks in Uttarakhand; flood alert sounded

A glacier breach in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday has flooded the Dhauli Ganga river, Joshimath. Alert has been issued for Srinagar, Rishikesh and Haridwar districts of Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat tweeted about the incident saying: “A disaster has been reported from Chamoli district. The district administration, police and disaster management departments have been directed to deal with the situation. Do not pay attention to any kind of rumours. Govt is taking all necessary steps.”

Ashok Gehlot, Rajasthan CM  tweeted- Worried to know of avalanche & flooding in #Chamoli, #Uttarakhand after a glacier broke there. Much concerned about the safety of people residing in the area. My prayers for their wellbeing & safety. Hope rescue efforts can start asap.

“Please pray for safety of people in #Chamoli #Uttarakhand. Reports of devastation, Vishnugad project dam broken , Alaknanda, Dhauliganga rivers angry. Uncontrolled water flowing down. Many reported missing.” tweeted an eyewitness.

The Chamoli district magistrate has instructed officials to evacuate people living in villages on the bank of the Dhauliganga river, news agency ANI reported.

Joshimath-Malari bridge has been washed away due to the flooding in Dhauli Ganga river. This bridge was used by Indian Army personnel to go to the border areas.

NDRF teams have been rushed from Dehradun . SDRF & local administration is already at spot.
