GNDU added another feather; first university to get approval from NCTE for Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)

Northern Regional Committee, National Council for Teacher Education, New Delhi has approved Integrated Teacher Education Programmes (ITEP) viz-a-viz B.A.- B.Ed., B.Sc.-B.Ed. and B.Com.-B.Ed for secondary stage teachers to Department of Education, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar from the session 2023-24.

The intake capacity of these courses is 50 students each in BA-B.Ed, BSc B.Ed and B.Com B.Ed (Started for the first time in the country) respectively. Prof (Dr) Amit Kauts, Head, Department of Education said that this course has been implemented by NCTE after NEP 2020 recommended this course for preparing teachers for school system. This course will be the degree which will make students eligible to teach in school system. NCTE aims to start this course initially in 50 central and state universities of the country based on NIRF, NAAC ranking and requisite infrastructural, instructural facilities available in the multidisciplinary institutions (Universities and Govt degree colleges).

NEP (2020) is formulated to restructure the system of education in the country. It very strongly recommended that integrated teacher education programmes (ITEP) will become the minimum degree qualification for becoming eligible for school teaching by 2030.

To fulfill this objective and for effective implementation of NEP (2020), Guru Nanak Dev University, a multidisciplinary university having 10 faculties and 45 departments has launched these programmes. The department of education aims to develop an environment of interaction among various faculties for utilising services for imparting disciplinary knowledge to students.

Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr) Jaspal Singh Sandhu expressed his satisfaction and happiness at the launch of these courses in the university. He lauded the efforts of Department of Education and wished that all departments will actively contribute and interact with various concerned departments to prepare kind of teachers NEP 2020 aspires to. Further, he added that these courses would definitely help to focus on multidisciplinary environment and holistic development among higher education students.
