GNDU organized National Mathematics Day

SciRox-Science Club of the  Guru Nanak Dev University organized National Mathematics Day under the dynamic guidance of Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) Jaspal Singh Sandhu. The event was supported by Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh.

Prof. Preet Mohinder Singh Bedi, Dean Students’ Welfare of the Guru Nanak Dev University was the Chief Guest on the occasion. In his inaugural address, Prof. Bedi, motivated the students to explore new horizons in the field of mathematics. Prof. Jatinder Kaur, Mentor-SciRox Club and Head Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences briefed about the event and shared information about the activities of SciRox club.

The celebration of National Mathematics Day included Students’ Seminars by college students of Amritsar, Model Exhibition by school students of Amritsar and Expert lectures. Dr. Jitender Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics of the University was the eminent speaker of the day and delivered his talk on “Some Ingenious Mathematics Proofs”.  In his lecture he narrated the story of great Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan that how he wrote important mathematical proofs despite facing health issues. He shared with students about how Srinivasa Ramanujan became the best mathematician of his time and how difficult it was to believe the proofs which he gave at that time in such a young age. Dr. Singh even introduced the students about some proofs given by Ramanujan and explained them to students.

The lecture was an interactive one and students showed their curiosity to explore more proofs given by such a great mathematician. The lecture was followed by the answering to the queries raised by participants. Prof. Loveleen Kumar Grover, Head, Department of Mathematics also shared his views and encouraged the students for such activities. Dr. Bindiya, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics of the University briefed about the importance of the day and told the students to accept the challenges in their respective fields in order to build up the scientific temperament.

The students from different schools and colleges of Punjab were among the participants along with students from different departments of the university. Ten students receiving the cash prizes for delivering the seminars were Mandeep Kaur,  Sharanjeet Kaur,  Gaganpreet Singh and  Kaveljeet Kaur from Sri Guru Angad College of Education, Khadur Sahib, Tarn Taran;  Harpreet Singh, DAV College, Amritsar;  Arundati from Hindu College, Amritsar;  Rishita Sharma,  Akanksha,  Mithila Sood and  Tejas Srivastav from Guru Nanak Dev University.
