Haryana, Rajasthan ready to take water through BML; BBMB releasing, to release water through turbines

To maintain the inflow of water in the reservoir, Bhakra Beas management board had released 40387 cusecs of water from the Bhakra dam and 39602 cusecs from the Pong dam on July 26,2023 from the power generation turbines. The total outfow (water released) from both the dams was 79989 cusecs on July 26,2023

The board has taken this decision after the incessant rains in the Himachal Pradesh causing regular inflow of water in the dams. Due to this high inflow of water, the water level is increasing day by day in Bhakra and Pong dam.

As per available information, after taking consent from the partner states-Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, today, the BBMB has decided to release around 98 thousands cusecs of water from both the Bhakra dam and Pong dam. The management has decided to release 48 thousands cusecs from Bhakra dam and 50 thousands cusecs from Pong dam through power generation turbines.

As per sources,” out of this 98 thousands, 23 thousand cusecs of water will be sent to Rajasthan and Haryana through Bhakra Main Line (BML), and Punjab will manage 20 thousands cusecs of water. 50,000 cusecs will be released in Beas river from Pong dam.” Earlier, both Haryana and Rajasthan had refused to take the water.

Meanwhile, the director water regulation Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Er JP Singh could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

When contacted secretary BBMB Satish Singla on Haryana, Rajasthan agreeing to take water, he said, “yes they are taking the water. Earlier due to some repairs in the canals, they don’t take water. Adding further he said, as per my knowledge the water to be released from Bhakra is around 41000 cusescs through turbines , not 48000 thousands cusecs.”

Haryana, Rajasthan ready to take water through BML; BBMB releasing, to release water through turbines. At present the Bhakra dam level is at 1657.53 feet against 1586.56 feet on the same day, last year. The danger level of Bhakra dam is 1680 feet.

Similarly, at present the water level of Pong dam is 1376.44 feet where as it was 1323.1 feet on the same day, last year. The danger level of Pong dam is 1392 feet.
