Dr. Damanjit  Sandhu,  Professor and Head , Department of Psychology Punjabi University Patiala has been nominated on two national expert committees of National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India for developing and reviewing training programmes for Panchayati Raj functionaries, Social Work educators and police functionaries on  issues like Prevention of drug abuse, old-age care, beggary prevention and welfare of transgenders.

The National Institute of Social Defence is the nodal training and research institute in the field of social defence. It is currently focusing on human resource development in the areas of drug abuse prevention, welfare of senior citizens and transgender persons, beggary prevention, and other social defence issues.

Prof. Sandhu shared that the target of the training programs would be Mid-level Police Functionaries including DSPs., Assistant Commissioners, Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors Asst., Sub-Inspectors, etc., Panchayati Functionaries including Village Panchayat President, Vice President, Chairman of Panchayat Union, Vice Chairman, Zila Parishad, Councilors, DDOs, B.D.O.,.extension officials, Gram Sevaks , Social Work Educators , Lecturers, Field Supervisors, Research scholars, Students, etc.

Honour for Punjabi University HoD, nominated on two national expert committees of National Institute of Social Defence. Also,  comprehensive, context-specific, and inclusive counselling modules  will be created for Five-day Training Program on Counselling Skills for Transgender Persons(Target Group – NGO/CBO functionaries, Garima Greh staff, and social work educators) and Two-day Training Program on Counselling of Persons Engaged in Begging(Target Group – State Nodal Officers and NGO representatives under the SMILE-Beggary scheme).
