IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal arrested in 2015 Behbal Kalan firing case

In a major development, Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate 2015 Behbal Kalan firing case , today arrested Paramraj Singh Umranangal, IGP and well known Punjab police officer from Chandigarh. He was arrested by a special team set up to probe the 2015 crackdown on anti-sacrilege protesters in October 2015 in which two Sikh youths were killed in the police firing in Behbal Kalan, Kotakpura of Faridkot district. The same was confirmed by SIT member and IG Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh.

Umranangal was earlier also questioned by the SIT in November last year.  IGP Umranangal had allegedly directed the police officials at Kotkapura to use fire weapons to disperse the protesters who were sitting on protest at main chowk of Kotkapura town on October 14, 2015.

SIT members had claimed that the questioning of these officials could hold the key to the mystery behind as to who ordered the police firing that resulted in the death of two sikh youths.

IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal arrest is second major arrest after the special investigation team set up to probe the case had last month arrested former Moga district police chief SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma from his Hoshiarpur residence. The former SSP, according to the SIT, was about to leave the country when he was arrested. It had been alleged that he had got himself visas to travel to UK, Canada and USA and was trying to abscond.

Charanjit Sharma, then SSP was leading the police party that allegedly opened fire at the anti-sacrilege protesters at Behbal Kalan, in which two Sikh youths were killed.
