She mentioned, how a happy mind has shown to protect against heart disease, memory loss, diabetes, cancer, strokes etc.

She insisted that the enjoyment of life and general happiness are determinants of continued mobility and future disability in seniors.

Talking about the happiness chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins in details, Glory suggested practical ways with which participants could boost the release of these chemicals and in turn increase happiness levels.

She emphasized on how we perceive old age as a society also greatly impacts how the seniors see themselves and their capabilities.

“A common perception is of associating old age with decay, disease, weakness, boredom and isolation. This perception is not only held by the younger group in the society, but most seniors also subconsciously force themselves to fit the mold of what is expected and accepted in society.

The fear of being judged or standing out can sometimes force the elderly to give upon their desires. They begin to restrict themselves on exploring their areas of interests or venturing into a new business or even in establishing new relationships.”

Glory insisted that as seniors there is a need to challenge these thought processes and focus on growth, personal happiness, relationships and building talents even when one hits 60 in age.

She stressed on looking at the 60+ age group not as a typical “retired” age group but as a group which has ample opportunity for personal development filled with happiness and growth. A healthy and happy senior population can give hope and happiness to the youth as well, she asserted.
