In a surprise move, the ministry of home affairs has again extended the internet suspension in certain areas of Punjab, bordering Haryana.
The ministry has directly ordered the suspension of internet services in areas under around 20 police stations of Punjab. Earlier in its February 12,2024 orders, MHA had suspended the internet services in 11 police stations.
Haryana government has already suspended internet services in its 7 districts bordering Punjab.
In view of the farmers’ agitation and march towards New Delhi, internet services have been suspended till February 24,2024 in select areas under some police stations of Patiala, Sangrur, Bathinda, Mansa, Sri Muktsar sahib, SAS Nagar and Fatehgarh Sahib districts on the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
As per available information the revised letter had been issued on February 16 by the MHA ordering suspension of internet services between February 17 and February 24 in areas falling under certain police stations in the seven districts bordering Haryana. The reason for writing the letter seems to be based on certain inputs received from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) since a copy of the letter has also been marked to the Director Intelligence Bureau.
