The Punjab Police special investigation team (SIT) led by ADGP LK Yadav. probing the post-sacrilege police firing incident at Kotkapura in 2015 has summoned former deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal to appear on August 30 for questioning, under section 160 Cr PC.
Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had on April 9, 2021 directed the state government to constitute an SIT to conduct an investigation into two cases registered at Kotakpura police station related to the police firing on a crowd protesting the alleged desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, the summons order issued on August 18, 2022 to Sukhbir Badal to appear in person with the relevant records before the SIT at 10.30 am on August 30 at Punjab Police Officers’ Institute, Sector 32, Chandigarh
Shiromani Akali Dal President and former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was the home minister when the Kotkapura firing took place. He is summoned by the SIT in connection with two first information reports (FIRs) number 192 and 129 registered at the Kotkapura city police station on October 14, 2015, and August 7, 2018.
After the change of guard in the state, this is the first time that Sukhbir Singh Badal will be quizzed in connection with Kotkapura firing incident during the Aam Aadmi Party regime. Earlier, two SITs have questioned Sukhbir three times in this case.
Is Sukhbir Badal in deep waters? SIT issues summons under section 160 Cr PC. Last month, the SIT questioned former director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini and filed a status report in Faridkot court. Saini was removed from the top police post by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in 2015 following incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and subsequent violence in the state in which the police force was accused of excesses that left two people dead.
