Jail superintendent has no authority to shift any inmate to other jail at its own- Jail Superintendent on Malwinder Mali’s allegation

“A jail superintendent has no authority to shift any inmate to other jail at its own. The shifting of any inmate lies with the court or the government” said Patiala Central Jail Superintendent Varun Sharma.
Earlier, Malwinder Singh Mali, a political analyst, close associate former SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra, former SAD MP Prem Singh Chandumajra, political advisor of former PPCC president Navjot Singh Sidhu was arrested by the Mohali police on a complaint under IT Act, imprisoned in Patiala jail, accused the jail administration of misbehaving and expressed the fear of being sent to a distant prison. He is on 14 day judicial remand in Patiala Central Jail.
Malwinder Singh Mali, who is under judicial custody in the Central Jail Patiala here today, talking to his younger brother Ranjit Singh Grewal on phone, told that he was to have an eye operation, regarding which the reports received in the jail three days ago were not given to him. Similarly, when his younger brother Ranjit Singh Grewal, who went to visit him in jail, was allowed to meet after 3 hours of hassle. He said that now the prison administration is making plans to send him to a far-off prison, so that he can be harassed as much as possible. He said that if there is any physical harm to him due to non treatment of his eyes, then the jail administration will be responsible.
On these allegations, Patiala Central Jail superintendent Varun Sharma said “A jail inmate Malwinder Singh Mali gave a letter to Superintendent Jail on September 21,2024 (Saturday) asking him to get his requisite eye treatment from some hospital. The inmate was called along with adequate security to the office of jail superintendent. The concerned officer asked him if he wanted to continue the treatment at a private hospital and was also briefed that for this the inmate has to approach the Court. But the inmate stated that he doesn’t want to delay the process and would avail the medical treatment from the Government hospital. So yesterday (September 21,2024) itself the letter was marked to the jail medical officer appraising him about the request. After examining the patient, the inmate was referred by the medical officer for the eye treatment on September 23,2024 (Monday). The medical escort from Patiala police has been sought for the same.”

The mulaqaat of the inmate was conducted as per the provisions of the Prison Rules” added Varun Sharma.
