Jumbo size Punjab Police top: 47 DGPs, ADGPs, IGs to manage state police

Today, the state government has promoted 8 Punjab police IPS officers from ADGP to DGP. According to a home department rules, IPS officers have a vertical tenure-based promotion system in accordance with IPS cadre rules. On the completion of their time in service, the state government has promoted 8 IPS officers to their next rank. Anyone who has served 25 and 18 years in service is eligible to become a DGP, ADGP and IG, respectively, in Punjab.
The government has promoted 8 additional director general of police (ADGP) Dr Naresh Kumar, Ram Singh, SS Srivastava, V Neerja, Amardeep Singh Rai, Parveen Kumar Sinha, B Chandra Sekhar and Anita Punj to director general of police (DGP)
With this promotion the Punjab police now have 20 DGP level officer , 16 ADGP ranked officer in its force and 11 inspector general of police (IGPs) are going to mange the state police of around 80,000 officers, personnels and to meet the requirements of changing population and crime.
With today promotion of 8 ADGPs, the state will have 1 DGP and 19 Special DGPs against the provision and notification of the personnel department of the government of India, Punjab has two sanctioned posts of DGPs. Now IPS officers from 1989 batch upto 1994 batch are promoted as DGPs. Sanjiv Kalra of 1989 batch is the senior most officer working in the state. His batch mate Parag Jain is on central deputation and posted as RAW chief. Another officer Harpreet singh Sidhu of 1992 batch is also on central deputation.
The 16 ADGPs are from 1995-2000 batch IPS officers. Out of these 16, 4 officers-Kapil Dev, Rajiv Ahir, Parveen Kumar Rai and Rakesh Aggarwal are on central deputation. IGPs Gautam Cheema and Paramraj Singh Ummrangal are not promoted due to issues in their service and are out of these 16 ADGPs.
Similarly, the state government has 11 IG ranked officers. Out of these 11, 3 officers namely Kaustubh Sharma, Ashish Choudhary, Harsh Kumar Bansal are on central deputation and rest are working in Punjab.
Earlier, Punjab government has promoted 8 additional director general of police (ADGPs) of 1994 batch as DGPs . The officers waited for more than 19 months to get their promotion orders as they were entitled to get promoted from January 1,2025
As per set procedure, the state home department had initiated the process of promoting eight ADGPs of the 1994 batch to the rank of DGP, so that they can be promoted from January 2025. But, the state chief secretary KAP Sinha, IAS had raised objections for creating more posts of DGPs and making Punjab Police top brass heavy.
