After Diljit Dosanjh performed at Coachella last year, Indo-Canadian singer and rapper AP Dhillon along with Sid and NAV (Navraj Singh Goraya) performed at this year Coachella. Dhillon follows in the footsteps of Diljit Dosanjh, who made waves with his all-Punjabi set at the festival last year.
Indo-Canadian singer and rapper AP Dhillon wants to make sure that Punjabi music benefits from that platform, too.Dhillon – who recently collaborated with Stormzy – performed at the Sahara Stage at Coachella on Sunday, one year after Diljit Dosanjh reportedly became the first artist ever to play a completely Punjabi set at the festival. Fellow Punjabi Canadian rapper Nav takes the stage right after Dillon’s set.
As per reports, at the end of his set, the flying-V guitar that Dhillon used during the performance was made to shreds by the artist himself as he went full-blown rockstar and smashed the instrument to pieces.
New reports says Dhillon’s rise in recent years comes amid a time of major growth for music out of India. Spotify reported earlier this year that consumption of Indian music on the platform has grown about 2000 percent worldwide since the streaming platform came to the country five years ago, and Dhillon thinks a Punjabi music explosion isn’t far behind.
Singer-songwriter Sid Sriram has delivered his first performance at Coachella. Sid performed on April 12 and will perform again on April 19. AP Dhillon performed on April 14 and will again perform on April21.
