Congress fielded Kanhaiya Kumar against BJP’s Manoj Tiwari

The Congress on Sunday announced the Lok Sabha candidates for three seats in Delhi. Kanhaiya Kumar will contest elections from North East Delhi, pitted against BJP’s Manoj Tiwari.

Kumar is presently in-charge of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). Kumar is fielded on one of the three seats which the party is contesting in Delhi as part of a pact with INDIA bloc ally Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). While the AAP is contesting the East, South, West and New Delhi Lok Sabha seats, the Congress will field its candidates on the North West, North East and Chandni Chowk seats

Kumar will face Manoj Tiwari is a two-time MP from this constituency. In 2019, the Bhojpuri actor-turned-politician had defeated former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Kumar, 37, will be contesting his second Lok Sabha election. In 2019, he had contested as a Communist Party of India candidate from Bihar’s Begusarai, wherein he had lost to Union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Giriraj Singh. The former JNUSU president joined the Congress in 2021 and was inducted into its apex decision body, the Congress Working Committee, in 2023.

The elections in Delhi will be held on May 25 and the counting of votes will take place on June 4, 2024.

About Kanhaiya Kumar:

Kanhaiya Kumar is a former leader of All India Students Council (AISF) and Communist Party of India and currently a leader of the Indian National Congress . He was elected to the post of President of JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) Students’ Union in 2015. In February 2016, a case of sedition was registered at JNU for raising anti-national slogans at a student rally against the hanging of Mohammed Afzal Guru. , a Kashmiri separatist convicted of attacking the Indian Parliament in 2001. He was arrested by Delhi Police. He was released on interim bail on 2 March 2016, as no evidence was produced by the police of Kumar participating in anti-national slogans.

A book by Kanhaiya Kumar was published named Bihar to Tihar. Recently, he left his former party and joined Congress. He was also seen with Rahul Gandhi in Bharat Jodo Yatra . Now the Congress Party has appointed him in-charge of the Indian National Students Union.
