The Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University organized S. Bishan Singh Samundri Memorial Lectureship Award lecture. This lecture was organized in the profound memory of S. Bishan Singh Samundri, Founder Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University.

Prof. (Dr.) Beant Singh Ahloowalia, Scientist International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, Austria delivered this special lecture on “Use of Radiations for Producing New Crop Varieties”. The lecture was sponsored by Sardar Jaswant Singh Memorial Education Trust, Jalandhar.

Prof. (Dr.) Beant Singh Ahloowalia emphasized on the role of exposure of radiations for developing new varieties of oil seeds, pulses and flowers. He suggested that nuclear techniques can play a great role in meeting the ever increasing needs of the food for growing populations. He concluded his lecture with the suggestion that there is a strong requirement to use the new methods for developing the disease resistant as well as diversity of the plant species.

Lecture was presided over by worthy Vice-Chancellor Prof.(Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu and he advised the students and faculty to work hard for achieving excellence in academics and research. Prof. Sarabjot Singh Behl, Dean Academic Affairs also addressed the students and advised them to work with sincerity.   On this occasion Dr. K.S. Rai, Professor Emeritus, University of  Notre Dame, introduced the aims and objectives of Sardar Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Trust, Jalandhar. Prof. (Dr.) Beant Singh Ahloowalia was felicitated with the S. Bishan Singh Samundri Award which included a momento, certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000/- .

Earlier, Dr. Manrpreet Singh Bhatti, Head, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences extended a formal welcome to the guests on the occasion and briefed about the achievements of the Department. Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Nodal Officer, Sardar Jaswant Singh Rai Lectureship Awards, apprised the audience about Prof. K S Rai and the Trust. This was followed by the introduction to the speaker by Prof. Saroj Arora, Coordinator of the Programme. The vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Renu Bhardwaj, Dean Faculty of  Life Sciences. The programme was attended by Prof. A. K. Thukral, Dr. A S Soodan and faculty of the other Life Sciences Departments.
