Under the expert guidance of AIIMS Bathinda Director Dr. D.K. Singh, esteemed Anesthetist and Critical Care Specialist, the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) achieved a remarkable milestone by performing the first-ever video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to remove a sizable tumor originating from the spinal cord. This groundbreaking procedure, conducted at the second thoracic vertebrae on the right side of the chest, marked a significant leap in medical innovation and patient care.
The proficient team, spearheaded by Dr. Rajiv Kumar, a distinguished Professor and Head of CTVS, showcased exceptional skill and dedication throughout the operation. Joining him were the adept surgeons Dr. Dilrag Dhindsa and Dr. Klein Dantis, both Assistant Professors in the Department of CTVS, along with Dr. Ujjwal JR from the Department of General Surgery.

Guided by an expert anesthetic team led by Dr. Gopal and Dr. Gegal, with invaluable support from Dr. Anju Grewal, the VATS technique was employed with precision. This advanced approach enabled not only the successful removal of the 4×3 cm tumor but also facilitated various other intricate procedures, including stapled lung biopsy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, and resection of the mediastinal mass, among others.
