Manish Tiwari raises the issue of bringing coal to Punjab through Adani port in Parliament
Bahadurjeet Singh/Rupnagar, February 13,2023
Member of Parliament from Sri Anandpur Sahib and former Union Minister Manish Tiwari has raised the issue of financial loss to the Punjab due to the order of the Union Ministry of power to bring coal to Punjab through Adani Port instead of rail route, which has increased the cost of power generation.
Raising the issue in Parliament, Member of Parliament from Sri Anandpur Sahib and former Union Minister Manish Tiwari said that the state of Punjab takes coal from the Mahanadi coalfields from Odisha to generate electricity. If this coal is brought directly to Punjab from Odisha by rail as before, then the distance is 1830 km. But the Union power ministry has written to the Punjab government on November 30, 2022 asking the state that instead of bringing the coal directly by rail from Mahanadi, take the coal to the port of Paradeep and unload it at the Adani port at Dahej and Mundra via Sri Lanka. Then this coal will be brought to Punjab by rail, 1500 km away from Adani port.
He alleged that the Union Ministry of Power is directly discriminating against the Punjab government and the people of Punjab to benefit Adani. Due to this, the cost of transporting coal has increased from Rs 4350 per tonne to Rs 6750 per tonne. Due to which the price of a unit of electricity has increased from Rs 3.60 to about Rs 5 .
Manish Tiwari raises the issue of bringing coal to Punjab through Adani port in Parliament. He strongly appealed to the government to withdraw this discriminatory letter towards Punjab and allow coal from Mahanadi Coldfields to be brought to Punjab directly by rail.
