Mata Gujri College organizes 50th Annual Athletic Meet
Continuing its legacy of inter-disciplinary excellence, overall growth and development of its students, Mata Gujri College held 50th annual athletic meet. On this occasion, Bhai Gobind Singh Longowal, President, SGPC, was the chief guest and Dr. Jatinder Singh Sidhu, Director Education, SGPC arrived as special guest. In the prize distribution ceremony, Dr. Gurdeep Kaur Randhawa, Director of Sports, Punjabi University, Patiala was the chief guest. The sports function got off to a spectacular start with flag hoisting, release of colorful balloons and March past in which more than 2000 students of the college participated.
Emphasizing the importance of sports in the students’ life, Bhai Gobind Singh Longowal, President, SGPC, Sri Amritsar Sahib said, “Sports are important part of student life. Sports make us physically healthy as well as teach us discipline, team work, leadership and punctuality and keep youngsters away from bad habits.”
He said,” Sportsmen are great gift to society. So students should participate very enthusiastically.” On this occasion, he also motivated the students to adopt Gurmat life and connect with their culture and history.
Welcoming the guests and highlighting the achievements of the college, Director Principal, Dr. Kashmir Singh said, “Students of this college, pursuing contemporary academic education are also aware of their culture, history and moral values. They play great role in annual athletic meet and participate with great fervor and it is very proud moment for the college that it has produced great players at the international level.”
Dr. Jatinder Singh Sidhu, Director Education, SGPC, said, “Students should have an aim in their life and pursue those goals with hard work. For this, they should be strong physically as well as psychologically. So students should be motivated towards sports.”
Dr. Parminder Kaur Randhawa, Head of the physical education department presented annual sports achievements report. Prof. Bikramjeet Singh Sandhu, Dean Academics conducted the stage very efficiently. During the prize distribution ceremony, Dr. Gurdeep Kaur Randhawa, Director Sports, Punjabi University, Patiala distributed prizes to the students and said,” Sports play great role in making good human being. So students should have an interest to participate in the sports since the childhood.”
Ranjit Singh Libra, honorary secretary, college managing committee, extended a vote of thanks. On this occasion, Ravinder Singh Khalsa, member, SGPC, Jagir Singh, Manager, Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib, former Prof. Ashok Sood, former Prof. Pritam Singh, Dr. Rajinder Kaur, Vice-Principal (Academics), Prof. Harveen Kaur, Vice-Principal (Administration), Prof. Balwinder Singh, Prof. Harjeet Kaur, Bahadur Singh, Coach, other important personalities of the city, staff members and students were also present.
Results of the competitions
In these competitions, Sumanpreet Singh and Harmanjot Kaur were declared best athletes. Tejinder Singh and Harpreet Kaur were declared All Rounder.
In the boys’ shot put competition, Gurpartap Singh, Manjot Singh and Satvir Singh bagged 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the discus throw competition, Gurpartap Singh, Manjot Singh and Maninder Singh secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the 800m race, Deepak Kumar, Jujhar Singh and Santosh Rai achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the javelin throw, Manpreet Singh, Faryad Khan and Amrinder Singh got 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the 1500m race, Deepak Kumar, Dilshad Akhtar and Jaspreet Singh won 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the high jump, Samanpreet Singh, Faryad and Sukhpal Singh stood on 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the 400m race, Santosh Rai, Sumanpreet Singh and Dilshad Akhtar attained 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
In the girls’ discus throw competition, Maneetinder Kaur, Navjot Kaur and Sandeep Kaur bagged 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the shot put, Navjot Kaur, Harmanjot Kaur and Maneetinder Kaur secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the high jump, Harmanjeet Kaur, Sandeep Kaur and Ritu achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the 400m race, Harmanjot Kaur, Gurpreet Kaur and Tanu Saini got 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the 800m race, Ritu, Simranjeet Kaur and Kamalpreet Kaur won 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the javelin throw, Navjot Kaur, Ritu and Anita stood 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
