To increase farmers’ income as well as promote employment opportunities under Ghar Ghar Rozgar Yojana, Punjab government is encouraging farmers to practice agriculture allied business and imparts training for the same as well. Under Mission Tandarust Punjab, proper guidance is also given to the farmers to raise healthy animals.

The animal husbandry Department’s Center of Excellence on Cattle Development (Rauni Farm) Patiala’s veterinary polytechnic training center imparts training to educated farmers giving them opportunities for self employment in goat and pig rearing.

Deputy Commissioner Patiala Kumar Amit said that pig and goat farming were coming up as businesses that give handsome returns in least input. Keeping in view the need of hour, Captain Amarinder Singh government was encouraging farmers to adopt it.

In the year 2018-19, at Rauni Farm 800 farmers were imparted training in pig rearing and 85 were trained in goat farming. During this financial year 173 have been given training in pig rearing and 57 trained in goat training. After getting the training, 35 animal rearers are now opening their own piggeries. Similarly under RKVY scheme 49 females and two male goat units’ ten cases have been sent for loana to different banks.

Cooperative banks give Rs 8 lacs and Rs 2 lacs loans for 20 females and 4 male pigs and 40 females and two male goats.

Deputy Commissioner said that while cattle yield only, goats yield milk as well as meat. He added that health freaks are more inclined to consuming goat milk and meat. If pigs are given proper diet and reared scientifically, handsome returns can be earned from pig rearing too. Pig grows up at a very fast pace and has higher hunger of animals per litter.

Veterinary Polytechnic Training Center Deputy Director Dr Nitin Kumar besides training and hand holding for loan, Punjab government also provides piglets for pig rearing from Government Pig Farm Nabha, Chhajjumajra SAS Nagar, Gurdaspur, Malwal (Ferozepur) and help is also given for setting up pig farms.
