Mission Tandrust Punjab-National seminar on road safety inaugurated at GNDU

A two day national seminar cum workshop on ‘Road Safety and Right to Walk’ was inaugurated at Guru Nanak Dev University under Mission Tandrust Punjab. This workshop is being organized by the Guru Ramdas School of Planning of the Guru Nanak Dev University in collaboration with Punjab Police Commissonerate, WRI India, CSE, New Delhi and Punjab Vision Zero to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The seminar has been organized under the MoU signed between Guru Ramdas School of Planning, GNDU and Punjab Police.

Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice Chancellor inaugurated the seminar. Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill (IPS), Commissioner of Police, Amritsar, Prof. S.S. Behl, Dean Academic Affairs and Dr. Navdeep Asija, Traffic Advisor to Govt. of Punjab was the special guest on this occasion. The representatives of Punjab Police,  MoUD GOI, CSE New Delhi, Centre for Mobility New Delhi, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority, IK Gujral Punjab Technical University Kapurthala, Aarhus University Denmark, Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia Millia Islamia Delhi, LPU Jalandhar, Arcop Associates (P) Ltd, faculty and students of Guru Ramdas School of Planning participated in this seminar cum workshop.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Sandhu highlighted the needs of pedestrians and right to walk. He highlighted various initiatives of university encouraging walking and cycling. He emphasised the need for strict enforcement of rules and regulatory measures within the city at different locations.

Dr. Kiran Sandhu, Head of the School welcomed all the chief guest and the delegates. Dr. Navdeep Asija, Traffic Advisor to Govt. of Punjab briefed the details of the seminar. He highlighted the road accidents and safety of pedestrians and cyclists as a crucial area of concern.

While highlighting the importance of transport planning, Prof. S.S. Behl said that planning should be oriented towards transit oriented planning. He said that there is need to synergize between planning and management and right of pedestrians should be prime focus.

Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill (IPS), Commissioner of Police, Amritsar highlighted road accidents and need for different traffic related studies that need to be conducted in the city. Dr. Ashwani Luthra apprised the audience of the transport related studies being conducted by the planning department and sharing the same with the traffic wing of Punjab Police. Arbab proposed vote of thanks to all the delegates present there.
