The Society of Materials and Mechanical Engineers (SOMME) organised a webinar under the title “Online Teaching & Effective Learning: Bridging the Gap” to help the teachers and the students in this phase of COVID 19 and lockdown.  The webinar has attracted more than 200 teachers to learn contemporary techniques about online teaching.

The event started with the opening remarks by Dr. Satya Prakash, retired Emeritus Professor from Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Department, IIT Roorkee, who is also the patron of the society. He stressed upon the conduct of such kind of events and making the teaching fraternity expert in online teaching as the need of hour. He laid stress on the use of advance tools and techniques in online teaching by teachers to result into effective learning among the students.

After this, President of SOMME and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, Dean, Planning and Development Dr. Buta Singh Sidhu  recalled all the earlier pandemics diseases faced by humans in past and compared the situation with present scenario. He expressed that presently we are at a better position to encompass online techniques within our array and same can be used in point of fact to lessen the loss of education these days.

He said that it is very easy for the teachers to continue teaching to students due to availability of internet services and advanced technological devices even during this current scenario of pandemic disease. He inspired the faculty and teaching fraternity to come forward to learn the new systems of teaching through online systems.

Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Director IT Enabled Services, MRSPTU, Bathinda having a sound industrial experience in software technology, discussed in depth the features of Google Classrooms, Google Meet and other online teaching platforms which can be used by the teachers to make their online teaching proficient.

MRSPTU-SOMME organised webinar: “online teaching & effective learning: bridging the gap”.Next session was handled by Dr. Pardeep Jindal, Assistant Professor, YCoE, Punjabi University Campus, Talwandi Sabo. He discussed about various tools and techniques available which can be used in making the teaching akin to the face-to-face offline teaching.

Dr. Jindal also shed light on ground issues of positioning the camera and creating focus exactly on the material to be taught. It was not only discussed but actually demonstrated the same through online system. He practically discussed few examples in which the use of technology made the same concept very effective in the learning process among the students.

The panel discussion at the end was the most attractive session of the webinar, in which the discussion was carried out by the panellists – Dr. Buta Singh Sidhu, Dr. Bhupinder Singh and Dr. Pardeep Jindal. All the issues like various hurdles and the positive aspects of the online teaching were analysed thoroughly. They discussed about the possible way outs, which may be undertaken by the teachers as well as the administrators at their school, college or institute level. All the experts concluded it by giving appropriate solutions to all the queries of the participants. It was also discussed that to conduct the examinations online, intelligent tools and softwares need to be developed which are equipped with anti-cheat mechanisms, so that in this situations, fair examinations may be conducted online.

In the concluding remarks, the President of SOMME – Dr. Buta Singh Sidhu thanked all the participants for participation in the webinar as well as for generous contributions in the shape of registration fee which will be spent in the war against COVID-19. Dr. Singh especially thanked Prof. Som Nath Sharma of Govt. Polytechnic College, Bathinda and Dr. Deep Kamal Kaur Randhawa, Assistant Professor, GNDU Regional Campus, Jalandhar who made good amount of contribution for this noble cause.
